pixel Art of Respect - Indigenuity

In April 2007 the Art of Respect 'Indigenuity' engaged a group of young people through a series of workshops run by professional aerosol artists. Fifteen young aerosol enthusiasts each created an artwork on canvas to be exhibited at Gallery M, each with a message to express.

This series of Art of Respect focused on the theme of Reconciliation with all works being inspired by thoughts on the subject. Participants were educated on indigenous culture, history & the importance to current society by local Kaurna man, Stephen Goldsmith.

While the exhibition presents inspiring works of art in their own right, it also represents an ongoing process that promotes mutual respect and understanding between the wider community and a group of young people.

During the workshops, a group of young men & women were introduced to and interacted with workers from a range of organisations, as well as sharing skills and ideas within the group. All parties gained an appreciation of each other's opinions, values, lifestyles & work, and more so a greater appreciation of indigenous culture.

This is the third series of Art of Respect, following the success of this program in 2004 and 2005. The Art of Respect program uses art as a platform to begin a dialogue between older people and those younger people who often find themselves on the outer fringes of our community, struggling to find their place.

The Art of Respect is a City of Marion Cultural Development & Crime Prevention Program, in partnership with Office of the Southern Suburbs.

Participants begin by developing designs on paper and then go onto develop these ideas onto boards during a series of workshops.
